In this part of Huta there is no longer a real farmer. I write about the old life because today's more and more often means empty houses.
The same carriage in which my parents rode to their wedding in 1948 stands in the barn today. The seats are still upholstered in burgundy velour.
Until 1963 Huta Głodowska had no electricity. A paraffin lamp, a well and a wood-fired cauldron were the whole technology of the house.
For carnival there were whip-round balls. To an accordion and a drum people danced till dawn, and at midnight came the chocolate waltz.
On every Sunday of Lent the Lenten lamentations were sung in one house after another. A village without electricity lived by its neighbourhood.
Once a week butter was churned from the cream. Mother carried it to the market in Lipno — on foot, a basket on her arm.
On 16 January 1922 Franciszek and Waleria bought the farm in Huta Głodowska. Exactly a hundred years later I finished this book.
Franciszek sailed to America in 1911, leaving his pregnant wife at home. Waleria did not wait.
After months of writing, conversations and searching for documents, the account of the Kępiński family and Huta Głodowska is complete.
