The same carriage in which my parents rode to their wedding in 1948 stands in the barn today. The seats are still upholstered in burgundy velour.
As a boy I polished the black leather aprons with shoe cream before every journey. The carriage went out to weddings, to the church fair at Skępe, to town.
Today it stands in the barn. The velour has faded but has not worn through. The wheels hold. Sometimes I think of restoring it — but I am afraid that in doing so I would rub away those hundred years.
