Lenten lamentations by a paraffin lamp

On every Sunday of Lent the Lenten lamentations were sung in one house after another. A village without electricity lived by its neighbourhood.

In the 1950s the village had neither electricity nor television. Social life rested on the neighbourhood. On every Sunday of Lent the Lenten lamentations were sung in one house after another.

By the light of a paraffin lamp whole families sat together — the Kępińskis, the Zaborowskis, the Pokrywińskis. Each housewife prepared something of her own: doughnuts, pancakes or yeast cake. The singing, the smell of paraffin and of yeast dough — I remember it to this day.

Today, when a screen glows in every home, it is hard to explain to the grandchildren that an evening at a neighbour's could be the whole event of the week. And yet there was something in it that one misses.
